The Province of Lodi The total extent of the Province of Lodi is of 782 sq. Km in the north of Italy, in Lombardy, very near to the south part of Milan.
Today it counts about 209.000 inhabitants, with a density of about 267,6 inhabitants per sq. km (data refer to December 31st 2004).
The Province was established by a decree of the President of the Italian Republic in 1992, today it includes 61 Communes; the biggest one is also its chief town, Lodi, with a population of about 42.000 inhabitants.
As far as its land configuration is concerned, the province resembles a long and narrow strip of land in the south of Lombardy, bordering Emilia Romagna region.
There are two important rivers that run through it, the Adda, in the east part, and the Po, in the south part; they seem to be a kind of natural boundaries; the land of the Province is mainly flat, with just some sporadic hilly areas, in its west part, where another minor river runs, the Lambro.
Helped by its particular morphology, the land of the Province is one of the most important Italian centres for farming and breeding, so to represent a European zootechnic pole.
For these reasons the socio-economic development of this territory is based on the local processing of the agro-alimentary products, in order to transform, process and sell the agricultural goods.
As a consequence of this, an important university pole for Veterinary is going to be founded in Lodi, it will include some important facilities and institutes for alimentary and zootechic research.
The Province of Lodi is also characterized by its historical aspect; there are many monuments, villas, castles, churches and abbeys endowed with a great historical and religious value, visited by many tourists and students every year.
Among them we can mention the Lodi Cathedral, the XII Apostles’ Basilica, in Lodivecchio, the Incoronata Church in Lodi and the Abbey of Abbadia Cerreto; they can be considered works of art of a great value for Christianity; they were also destinations of 2000 Jubilee.
The main aspects of our territory are: high quality gastronomy, historical and cultural treasures, agriculture on a European level (with more than 2500 km of water courses), a lot of small and medium concerns and high value-added service industries.
The Province presents a widespread commuting towards the “big Milan” and several differences of lifestyles between north, more linked to Milan, and south, more concerned with a simpler and rural lifestyle.
Even though the Province has been established very few years ago, today it is supplied with all the regional and local public offices, provided for the Italian law; it is one of the more economically developed areas of the Country.
